Stromness Museum is an independent museum maintained and managed by a committee of volunteers elected from the members of the Orkney Natural History Society Museum SCIO.
It is one of Scotland's oldest independent museums, dating back to 1837 and the formation of the Orkney Natural History Society.
The Stromness Museum exists to promote natural science, to preserve local history and to offer an enjoyable educational and informative experience to as large a range of people as possible.

On show you will find objects salvaged from the German High Seas Fleet scuttled in Scapa Flow in 1919, together with information on Orkney’s role in both World Wars; find out about Orkney’s strong links with Canada and the Arctic; explore Orkney’s maritime past, and revel in the quality ship and maritime models. There is a wealth of natural history in the upstairs Victorian Natural History Gallery, with extensive bird collections complemented by displays of eggs, fossils, sea creatures, mammals, butterflies and moths. Orcadians have always been adventurers, so there is an equally large collection of artefacts collected by these travellers taken home to Orkney.
There are also children’s activities and a photographic archive.
