Greyfriars Kirk is situated in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town. It is the first church to be built in Edinburgh following the Scottish reformation in 1560. Come inside and experience its rich history from the signing of the National Covenant to our links with Greyfriars Bobby.

Greyfriars Kirk was founded in 1620. Greyfriars has played a key role in the Scottish reformation movements and its story is one of enlightenment for over 400 years. Visitors are invited to come into the church, see our magnificent stained glass windows and pipe organ or just enjoy the special atmosphere. Our small museum is packed with exhibitions to tell our stories. It not only explains the story of the kirk's role in the Scottish reformation but also that of Greyfriars Bobby, the loyal dog who kept vigil over the grave of his owner in the graveyard outside for 14 years. Our team of knowledgeable welcomers are on hand to answer questions. Browse our souvenir shop for maps, gifts, and guides.

As a church we offer a quiet place away from the busy city to pray, reflect, or simply rest your feet. You are also invited to join our Sunday services in English or Gealic, Midweek prayers on Thursday, or our monthly Refugio. Our aim is to be a welcoming, inclusive community and to respond to local needs in a variety of ways, including delivering our mission through the Grassmarket Community Project and Greyfriars Charteris Centre.

The Kirk is also an important venue for the arts and a beautiful space for social events. We offer free concerts most Thursdays as part of our Greyfriars at 12 series. We are also a venue for other concerts throughout the year, including during the Edinburgh festivals and Fringe.

Admission to the church is free, though a small donation of £3 towards our ministry is welcome.
