I am a registered (Single width) Harris Tweed Weaver specialising in the weaving and production of Standard Weight (heavy weight) Tweed on a Traditional Hattersley Domestic Loom which arrived here in 1926 to replace the Hattersley single shuttle loom arriving here in 1919. The pirn or (bobbin winder) is a 1919 original.
Both my Grandfathers were involved with Harris Tweed after their discharge from WW1. One as a weaver, the other as a small producer. My Father also continued weaving until 1993.
My Grandmother and Great Grandmother wove on Hand Powered wooden looms. The small loom or (Beart Bheag ). The shuttle was made from a sheep's shin bone and literally firing it through the shed of the cloth by one hand and catching it by the other !
You are very welcome to come along and learn about Weaving & Crofting, its Traditions and Processes, Old & New.
On display are many artefacts in relation to the above.
Warping, Traditional wool dying along with seasonal activities such as lambing, peat cutting, sheep shearing and sheep dog handling demonstrations.
