RSPB Scotland nature reserve at Forsinard in the Flow Country ~ Wildlife trails, viewing tower, visitor centre and special guided walks.
The RSPB Scotland visitor centre at Forsinard, housed in the former station buildings, is open Monday - Friday (9am-5pm) between April and October and helps visitors gain a greater understanding of one of the world's rarest habitats, the blanket bog, as well as the creatures and birds that live on it.
The reserve has two marked trails of different lengths which allow visitors to explore the peatland habitat, discovering the complex pool systems and giving them the potential opportunity to see some of the amazing wildlife on the reserve; such as breeding waders, hunting Hen Harrier or herds of grazing Red Deer.
The Flows Lookout Tower allows a unique perspective of a classic pool system on the Dubh Lochan Trail, which can now be accessed via either the new boardwalk or the existing flagstone trail.
Through connecting our visitors and young people with the natural world we hope to inspire them to take an active interest in helping to protect the peatland environment and the complex range of plants and animals that live here.
Further information
Visitors are welcome at all times, however if you are looking to see breeding peatland birds the best time of year to visit is April-June. If insects and peatland plants are your thing then June-August is the best time for your visit. Over the winter the number of species on the reserve declines greatly (most of our species come here to breed in the summer), but you can still enjoy the vast landscape views from the tower looking over the peatlands, and if you're lucky see some of the herds of red deer that come down close to the road.
Please note livestock graze on this site. They are doing an important job, creating ideal conditions for rare and threatened wildlife.
