Founded in the 1140s, St Giles' is the ‘Mother Kirk’ of Scotland and a fascinating place to learn more about Scotland’s history. Whether you are interested in medieval Edinburgh, intrigued by John Know and the Reformation, of which St Giles’ as the centre, or want to know more about Scottish traditions that still take place here, we have something for everyone! There are always friendly and knowledgeable volunteer guides on hand to answer any questions, and they might even reveal a few secrets about this ancient building… You can also take one of our free tours, or purchase an audio guide, to learn even more.
Highlights of a visit include our beautiful stained-glass windows, the impressive Rieger organ installed, an original copy of the Covenant, and the famous Thistle Chapel, home of Scotland's great order of chivalry.
St Giles' is situated on the historic Royal Mile, halfway between Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyrood, we are open every day including Sunday afternoon.

Service Times
There are two services every Sunday (see below for details) followed by music at 6pm, and there is a daily weekday service at noon which is a simple quarter-hour of readings and prayers where visitors are welcome to join with the congregation in worship.

Music & Events
The Cathedral hosts an extensive programme of musical events throughout the year, many of which are free to attend. Our St Giles' at Six recitals series takes place every Sunday at 6pm. Directions
Getting there by railway:- On exiting Waverley Station (main exit), turn left along Waverley Bridge. At the roundabout, cross over Market Street and walk up Cockburn Street. At the top of Cockburn Street, turn right onto the High Street (Royal Mile). St Giles' is a short walk ahead of you on the left-hand side.
