The Tenement House

The rooms of this Victorian flat retain many of their original fixtures and fittings, giving a sense of how ordinary Glaswegians lived in the first half of the last century. From the black horsehair reclining chairs to the scrubbed kitchen range, and the box beds to the working doorbell, authentic working gaslights and household medicines, there is so much to discover in this treasure trove of everyday history. Discover quirky items including a ball of soap, turned jet black from years of handling.

The current exhibition on wartime ‘Make Do and Mend’ details the efforts that millions made during and after the war, revealing thrifty recipes from the Ministry of Food for delicacies like ‘wartime shortbread’ and ‘mock cream’.

Children will enjoy playing with authentic household items at the handling table (and working out what they were used for) as well as taking quizzes around the house.
