The pretty harbour town of Kirkcudbright has been drawing painters and makers for well over a hundred years; so much so, that it’s known as Scotland’s Artists’ Town. There’s plenty of creativity to be found in the small galleries and art centres, as well as in the Kirkcudbright Galleries, a new gallery of national significance set in the transformed historic town hall. Here you can see permanent exhibitions including works of EA Hornel and Samuel John Peploe. Broughton House & Garden is another attraction to discover the art and life of ‘Glasgow Boy’ EA Hornel. If you’re visiting in the summer, be sure to check out what’s on – the town boasts a busy programme of Summer Festivities which includes an Arts and Crafts Trail and a floodlit military Tattoo and fireworks display.
