Built following the battle of Culloden, Fort George was completed in 1768 and designed to be an imposing and impenetrable place. Admire an impressive array of weaponry, from cannons to muskets, and see the huge bastions designed for maximum defence.
Still an active army barracks, it is home to the Black Watch, 3rd Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, and previously served other regiments from the British Army. Find out about the castle’s associated military regiments at The Highlanders’ Museum inside the fort. The ramparts are also perfect for dolphin spotting, as they look out over the Moray Firth.
