Nestled in a peaceful rocky hollow, two miles from the village of Kingarth in the south of Bute lies the remains of St Blane's Chapel. The site, which can date its monastic roots back to the 6th century, is believed to have been a precursor to the better known site founded by St Columba on Iona. The early Christian monastery was abandoned in the 9th century following Viking raids, while the later, 12th century parish church, with its chancel arch, remains visible today.
