Each year the Edinburgh Festivals bring a wave of colour and soaring excitement to the city. These festivals are renowned worldwide and see thousands of visitors and locals come together to enjoy a season of eclectic shows, performances and displays across Scotland's capital.

You may have heard of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August, but did you know there are 11 major annual events from April to December?

See a world of artistry and performance come to light across the city when venues big and small host shows, stand-up comedy, and screenings that highlight Scottish and international talent, whilst bringing people from all over the world together to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.

Edinburgh’s festivals serve up the most incredible smorgasbord of culture you could ever imagine, filling the city's performance venues, event spaces, and now the online world in late June, July, and August.

Edinburgh Science Festival – 4 - 19 April 2026; get hands on in the UK’s largest science festival, with a range of exhibitions, events, workshops, and performances, suitable for all ages.

Edinburgh International Children's Festival – 30 May - 7 June 2026; join in innovative and family-friendly theatre and dance for young audiences.

Leith Festival – 13 - 21 June 2026; a local festival run by Leithers, for Leithers, family-friendly and fun for all.

Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival – 17 - 26 July 2026; listen to top class live music when incredible musicians from all over the world.

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo – 7 - 29 August 2026; a highlight of the festivals each year, stirring music and performances from British and international military regiments.

Edinburgh International Festival – 7 - 30 August 2026; choose from the incredible array of classical music, theatre, opera, and dance.

Edinburgh Festival Fringe – 7 - 31 August 2026; enjoy three weeks of creative energy as performers take to the stage across the city.

Edinburgh Art Festival – 14 - 30 August 2026; an unmissable opportunity to see thought-provoking visual works created by talented Scottish and international artists.

Edinburgh International Book Festival – 15 - 30 August 2026; join author readings, Q&As and talks covering all types of literature.

Edinburgh International Film Festival – 13 - 19 August 2026; enjoy the very best in international cinema, from short films to feature length productions and more.

Edinburgh International Storytelling Festival - 21 - 31 October 2026; dive into tales, music, characters and more during this imaginative world-class festival.

Edinburgh's Hogmanay - 29 December 2026 - 1 January 2027; welcome in the new year with a torchlight procession, a street party, a live headline concert and incredible fireworks displays.

To help you make the most of visiting the festivals we've rounded up some handy tips:

  • Charge your phone (and bring a portable charger if you have one) so that you can check out the online programmes and digital flyers.
  • Wear comfy shoes – a day at the festivals can mean lots of walking.
  • Check the weather forecast – Edinburgh often experiences four seasons in one day! Make sure to pack a light rain jacket in case of a sudden downpour.
  • Bring water.
  • Start your day early so you can secure the best festival tickets and see the most popular visitor attractions before they get too busy.
  • Go for a mixture of performances to get a feel for everything that's going on.
  • Don’t be late for your show – some venues may not allow latecomers in, so be sure to arrive before the listed start time!
