October breaks in Scotland

October in Scotland is a time of vivid autumnal hues, a crisp chill in the air and starry skies overhead. Days are made for woodland walks and unhurried exploring, while evenings invite you to slow down; think cosy cafés, hearty seasonal food and nights spent in front of the fire. It’s a month that invites you to explore at a slower rhythm, as the country’s towns, countryside and coastline reveal their autumnal riches.

Pitlochry in Autumn

Hailed as Scotland’s “Big Tree Country”, October is peak season for autumn colour in Pitlochry and Highland Perthshire. The charming town of Pitlochry and the surrounding area glow with fiery reds, golds and russet tones, creating some of Scotland’s most striking seasonal scenery.

Forest walks and autumn colour

Take a stroll through Faskally Forest, where well-marked paths loop through mixed woodland ablaze with autumnal colour, or follow the riverside path along the Linn of Tummel for more spectacular foliage alongside sightings of red squirrels, otters and kingfishers. Nearby, the River Tummel, the Loch of the Lowes Circuit at Loch Dunmore and trails around the lower slopes of Ben Vrackie offer dramatic Perthshire scenery without committing to a full mountain hike. For iconic views, a walk or short drive to Queen’s View rewards you with a timeless Highland panorama enhanced by autumn tones.

The Enchanted Forest in Faskally Wood, Pitlochry

The Enchanted Forest

October also sees the return of the Enchanted Forest when the woods of Faskally are transformed after dark with immersive light, sound and storytelling installations. It’s a favourite family tradition in Perthshire’s calendar which never fails to brings a magical touch to the October break.

Blair Castle

History, cafés and pubs

October is also a great time to explore Pitlochry’s nearby attractions amid fewer crowds. Visit the Scottish Crannog Centre, where interactive exhibits and demonstrations bring reconstructed Iron Age loch-dwelling life vividly to life, or visit Blair Castle & Gardens, just north of Pitlochry, to explore over 750 years of history. After a day of exploring, warm up with a cuppa and cake at coffee shops and cafés such as Hettie’s Tearoom and Café Calluna or settle with a pint by the fire at traditional pubs like The Old Mill Inn or The Moulin Inn.

Pitlochry Festival Theatre

Pitlochry Festival Theatre

Bring the day to a close with an evening of live performance at the Pitlochry Festival Theatre, one of Scotland’s most celebrated cultural venues. This year it celebrates its 75th anniversary with vibrant new musical Ceilidh running until mid-October, alongside other theatre and studio events that bring world-class drama, music and dance to this wee Highland Perthshire town.

Go Wild Loch Lomond

Go Wild Loch Lomond

Loch Lomond walks, markets and water activities

Sitting at the southern gateway to Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, Balloch is an excellent base for autumn walks such as the Balloch Castle Country Park circular walk, with its colourful woodland and lochside scenery. If you're feeling adventurous, tackle the aerial playground at Go Wild Loch Lomond. Featuring zip lines, rope bridges and other obstacles, it's a unique chance to view the forest canopy from high above the ground. Even in October, it’s still possible to enjoy time on the water, with cruises from the Sweeney Cruise Co. and in suitable conditions, kayaking and paddleboarding with Loch Lomond Leisure offering a fresh perspective on the autumn landscape. At Loch Lomond Shores, the regular Sunday market brings together local food producers, bakers and craft-makers. It’s an easy-going place to browse seasonal produce and enjoy street food while taking in the tranquil beauty of the loch.

Natural retreats in East Lothian

Pumpkin picking and family days out

One of October’s highlights is pumpkin picking at Balgone Estate, where pumpkins of all shapes and sizes spout in the fields ready for selection. There’s also a ‘Haunted Trail’ to get you in the mood for Halloween, and the farm’s HERD Café where you can stop for a morning coffee or even enjoy an intimate candle-lit dinner on chilly autumn nights. You’ll find plenty more family attractions across East Lothian such as the Scottish Seabird Centre, Archerfield Walled Garden, East Links Family Park, and Foxlake Adventures – which has added grown-up appeal thanks to its outdoor sauna and fresh-water cold plunge experience.

Coastal escapes and autumn glamping

October is a lovely time to explore East Lothian’s coastal paths, country parks and towns and villages such as North Berwick, Haddington and Dunbar. Autumn is the perfect season to “coorie in” and accommodation such as Driftwood and Harvest Moon Holidays and Rock and Castle Escapes is perfect for hunkering down on chilly autumn nights after windswept days by the coast. Spend daylight hours taking in views of Bass Rock from beaches like Seacliff and Yellowcraig, exploring romantic ruins near Tantallon Castle, or walking the wide sands of Tyninghame and Belhaven Bay.

Gullane beach

Starry skies and birdwatching

Longer nights also bring opportunities to experience Scotland after dark. In fact, East Lothian is home to one of the darkest spots in Scotland, the Lammermuir Hills located near Haddington. Due to especially low levels of light pollution, on clear autumn evenings, it’s possible to spot thousands of stars and even glimpse the Milky Way with the naked eye. The skies are also filled with the sight and sound of returning migratory birds, as wintering species arrive along East Lothian’s coastline and wetlands. Head to Aberlady Bay and Gosford Sands, where pink-footed and greylag geese gather alongside curlew, redshank and wigeon. Along the dunes of John Muir Country Park as well as Gullane Bents and coastal walks around North Berwick, you can spot skylarks, meadow pipits, gannets and shorebirds.
