You might think you know hostels but think again – today’s hostels are for young and old, for solo travellers, families and groups, and offer a choice between cheaper communal rooms and private rooms with en suites.

There’s such a variety to find and book - from city centre hostels sitting right under Edinburgh Castle to the former bothy turned eco-hostel at Glen Affric (only accessible by foot or bike!), they all have a unique character and a warm welcome.

Plus it’s not just a comfortable bed for the night – Scotland’s hostels have some fantastic facilities, from pool tables and board games to keep you entertained to drying facilities and laundry rooms to help you with day-time activities.

Find and book your hostel

Most hostels offer online booking facilities and the best way to support them is by booking direct. They are very popular so make sure to book in advance as well, particularly in high season. Some hostels are closed during the winter period so it's best to check on their website.

In Scotland, you’ll find two hostel organisations:

Hostelling Scotland – a self-funded charity founded in 1931, it is part of an international hostelling community under Hostelling International and operates a network of hostels throughout Scotland, as well as independently owned and run affiliate hostels.

Scottish Hostels – set up in the mid-1980s, it is an association of independent hostels, bunkhouses, bothies and activity accommodation providers that is owned and run by its member businesses.

Hostel FAQs

What is a hostel?

A hostel is almost a mix between a hotel and self-catering – it’s a great community option as you’re more likely to meet fellow travellers.

Hostels often have large rooms so you can share with friends or family if you're looking for a group getaway. The rooms may be dorm-style with bunk beds, sleeping up to 10 people, or there can be private rooms with en-suite facilities. You'll find self-catering kitchens that will allow you to cook up a storm, as well as communal dining rooms and shared spaces, giving you the chance to meet other guests.

There are often extra facilities including drying rooms, laundries and bike storage, making it a great option for all outdoor enthusiasts.

Do hostels offer private rooms?

Hostelling isn't all about shared rooms - most hostels offer private rooms, many with en-suite accommodation just the same as hotels, B&Bs or self-catering.

Many hostels even allow you to book the whole venue through RentaHostel - a great option for local clubs or extended family and friends.

Are hostels suitable for older travellers?

Absolutely. Hostels are for all ages, so as well as solo and younger travellers there will be families, couples, retirees and groups, all enjoying some time away in Scotland.

Can families stay in hostels?

Hostels offer great value family friendly accommodation in a relaxed and comfortable environment. Facilities such as high chairs and cots are available to make your stay more comfortable and board games will help keep you entertained in the evenings.

There are a range of security measures in place to ensure hostels remain safe for all travellers, young guests in particular. From controlled entry doors to bunk beds with safety guards, staff are trained and experienced and often on-site around the clock.

What’s the price range compared to hotels?

It will depend on when you book your hostel, location of the hostel and the room type you choose. But hostels can be upwards of £30 per night.

Are hostels pet-friendly?

Many hostels are now dog-friendly, so you can share a room with your four-legged friend with extra perks including:

  • Treats on arrival
  • Water stations
  • Drying rooms
