Enjoy a day on the coast
As one of Scotland’s west coast islands, a stunning day out at the beach or around a rocky coastline is a must do. Whether it’s to catch a fiery sunrise or sunset, make sandcastles and play in the waves, or just enjoy the crisp sea air on an evening wander, Jura’s coastal spots do not disappoint. Corran Sands is a particularly picturesque spot!
Uncover local wildlife
Did you know, people are outnumbered 30 to 1 by red deer on Jura? Red deer have been roaming the island for hundreds of years and are said to have pure bloodlines, compared to other red deer elsewhere in Scotland that are crossed with the Sika Deer. Aside from deer, look up for your chance to see golden eagles and sea eagles soaring overhead, hen harriers and buzzards can also be spotted, most commonly at dusk, and at night you can hear owls hooting away in the distance.
Go for a wander
You are spoilt for choice with walking routes and trails on Jura, with immaculate views to match. The Paps of Jura are the most popular spot on the island for walking, with three peaks to scale and plenty of lower level moorland to explore. If you don’t feel up to a strenuous hike, there are a range of beginner and easy terrain trails too, from 45-minute walks to a few hours and half day hikes.

Corryvreckan Whirlpool
Located at the very northern tip of Jura, the Corryvreckan Whirlpool is a thrilling experience. One of the largest permanent whirlpools on earth and one of the most dangerous stretches of water around the British Isles, it is a popular place for charter boats to explore. One of the main departure points for boat trips to the whirlpool, known as the Gulf of Corryvreckan, is the small port of Crinan, on the Sound of Jura. Here you can venture out with an experienced skipper for an adrenaline-filled afternoon.
