April breaks in Scotland

Thinking about planning a spring getaway? April is a wonderful time to experience Scotland as the days grow longer and milder, and the country begins to burst back into life.  April sees many iconic attractions reopen for the season, alongside a lively calendar of events and festivals getting underway, so there’s no shortage of exciting things to see and do. Here’s how to make the most of April.

Bow Fiddle Rock on the coastline between Portknockie and Cullen

A taste of spring in Fife

As the warmer weather arrives, farms and farm shops across Fife fill their shelves with fresh, seasonal produce, including spring onions, spring greens, leeks, horseradish, cabbage and vibrant rhubarb - perfect for spring cooking and baking.

Cairnie Fruit Farm

Pick-your-own experiences and farm shops

Visit pick-your-own farms, where you can gather fresh fruit and vegetables straight from the fields to take home and enjoy. Fife is home to plenty of well-loved spots, including Barnsmuir Farm in Anstruther, Cairnie Fruit Farm in Cupar and Balgove Larder near St Andrews. Bowhouse, which is part of the Balcaskie Estate near St Monans, hosts bustling monthly market weekends showcasing local producers and products, from meat and vegetables to baked goods and more, while Blacketyside Farm Shop in Leven is great for a homemade lunch after a round of golf at Lundin Golf Club. Many of these farm shops sell home-grown produce alongside homemade jams, baked goods, artisan bread, and other local delights.

Ardross Farm, Fife

Join a farm tour

Make a day of it by joining a farm tour, where you can meet friendly animals and enjoy time in the countryside. Popular places include Pillars of Hercules Organic Farm & Café near Falkland, which offers a family-friendly atmosphere with woodland walks to explore, or, for something a little different, The Buffalo Farm near Kirkcaldy, where you can take guided tours to learn about buffalo farming and sample products made on the farm. A visit to The Rings in Cupar is guaranteed to be a real hit with the kids too, especially in early spring when playful newborn lambs can be seen around the farm. Some farms also offer on-site accommodation, such as Snugs at Logie Farm, Banchory Farm or Braeside Farm Holiday Cottages – perfect for unwinding in the countryside with great views and a truly rural feel.

Crail Harbour

Explore charming villages and historic sites

Wander through picturesque coastal villages like Anstruther, Crail and Pittenweem, where colourful harbours buzz with activities, and cafés, galleries and independent shops begin to open for the season. April is also a lovely time to explore Fife’s historic landmarks before the peak summer crowds arrive. Discover the atmospheric ruins of St Andrews Cathedral, step back in time at Falkland Palace with its beautiful gardens and links to royalty and Outlander filming locations, or explore the elegant interiors of Kellie Castle.

Meet the dolphins of the Moray Coast

April in Scotland is an ideal time to get outdoors and experience its incredible wildlife, with the Moray Coast offering some of the best dolphin-spotting opportunities in the country. As spring arrives, calmer weather conditions make it easier to explore the coastline and enjoy time by the sea.

Go dolphin spotting along the Moray Coast

Pods of bottlenose dolphins are often seen playing and feeding close to shore, putting on spectacular displays as they leap. Chanonry Point, located in Cromarty near Inverness, is one of the best places in the UK for shore-based dolphin watching. There are also several other excellent viewpoints along the wider Moray Firth, including Burghead, Hopeman, and Spey Bay, where these mammals are regularly spotted close to the coastline. For more chance to spot dolphins, try the Inverness Kessock Bridge area and Fort George near Inverness, both of which are popular with wildlife enthusiasts. Keep your eyes on the water for porpoises, seals, and seabirds as well, which are often spotted alongside the dolphins, making a trip to the Moray Coast a truly rewarding wildlife experience.

Visitors explore Findhorn beach in Moray Speyside

Explore beaches and coastal villages

Enjoy scenic coastal walks along the Moray Coastal Trail, where you can take in the sea views. The trail offers excellent opportunities to spot seabirds and other marine wildlife. You might see oystercatchers and gannets nesting on the cliffs, and seals can often be spotted lounging on the rocks or frolicking near the shore.

Moray’s wide sandy beaches, such as Lossiemouth East Beach or Cullen Beach, are perfect for tranquil strolls, making sandcastles and wildlife spotting. Be sure you explore the many coastal villages in the area too, each with its colourful harbour and unique charm. Findhorn is known for its vibrant arts scene, Lossiemouth offers a bustling seaside vibe, while Cullen is famous for its brightly painted houses and the classic Cullen Skink soup.

Balvenie Castle

Visit historic sites and whisky distilleries

Local attractions start to flourish for the season. Visit Elgin Cathedral, a striking ruin with soaring Gothic arches and a fascinating history, then stop by Johnstons of Elgin, a world-renowned luxury textiles manufacturer. A short drive from Elgin, Brodie Castle offers elegant interiors and an impressive art collection, while Balvenie Castle near Dufftown rewards visitors with sweeping views.

Whisky enthusiasts are spoilt for choice in Moray. Why not tour iconic distilleries such as The Macallan near Craigellachie, famous for its malts and striking modern distillery, or Glen Moray where you can learn about traditional distilling techniques and enjoy guided tasting tours? Nearby, you can also visit Aberlour, set beside the River Spey, and Glenfiddich near Dufftown, one of the world’s best-known single malt producers.

Explore Mull and the nearby islands

April is an excellent time to visit the Isle of Mull and its surrounding islands. Experience the relaxed pace of island life through local festivals, community events, artisan shops, and refreshing strolls. Spring also marks the start of the festival season, and Mull Music Festival is one not to be missed.

Tobermory

Mull Music Festival

The Mull Music Festival is one of the highlights on the island’s cultural calendar. This vibrant festival celebrates traditional Scottish music, with a packed programme of lively performances in local pubs and venues across Tobermory and beyond, ranging from folk and ceilidh bands to solo musicians and contemporary acts.

On nearby Iona, enjoy guided heritage walks and storytelling sessions that celebrate the island’s historic abbey and stunning natural scenery, while Staffa hosts early-season wildlife tours, perfect for spotting puffins, seabirds, and other marine life.

Island hopping adventures

With many ferry services resuming and calmer spring seas, Mull makes an ideal base for exploring the nearby islands, each offering its own charm and natural beauty. Just a short ferry ride away, Iona is famed for its historic Iona Abbey, serene beaches, and peaceful walking trails, while Staffa enchants visitors with its dramatic basalt columns and the world-famous Fingal’s Cave. Other nearby islands, like Ulva, offer rugged hiking trails, secluded beaches, and abundant wildlife, from otters to golden eagles, making April the perfect season for short island-hopping adventures.

Calgary Bay, Isle of Mull

Spring wildlife and scenic walks

The island’s coastal paths and hill trails offer dramatic views of cliffs, beaches, and glens, providing fantastic walking opportunities and ideal vantage points for spotting wildlife. April is an especially good time to spot seabird colonies, including guillemots, razorbills and puffins, returning to nest along the cliffs, while the nearby Iona often sees waders and geese. Inland, Ardmeanach and Calgary Bay are popular spots to see red deer or otters in the streams.
