Eco-friendly accommodation in Scotland

Scotland's wild landscapes and natural beauty make our country fantastic to visit. Help protect our natural heritage by making your next trip to Scotland an eco-retreat. Stay in a sustainable hotel or choose an eco self-catering option. These include eco lodges, rustic eco cabins, or even an eco-glamping experience.

What does green tourism really mean?

There are lots of ways we can help protect Scotland from the impacts of over-tourism, including considering where and when we visit, choosing sustainable and active ways to travel, and staying in environmentally-friendly accommodation. Green, sustainable tourism, or Responsible Tourism encourages visitors to Scotland to consider the impact their visit has on the environment.

Eco-friendly accommodation in Scotland

It is easy to be green in Scotland. Being eco-friendly no longer means getting off-the-grid and bathing in rainwater - unless you want to that is! Green accommodation in Scotland is easy to find, and options range from cosy eco cottages, quirky hostels, modern glamping pods, and self-catering eco-lodges, to grand castles and luxury green hotels.

Types of eco-friendly accommodation

Look out for the David Bellamy Conservation Award for Holiday Parks too, which recognises sites that make themselves a haven for wildlife, support their local communities and reduce, re-use and recycle as much as they can.

No matter what type of eco-friendly accommodation in Scotland you are looking for, there is plenty to choose from so you can enjoy environmentally friendly holidays. From eco-friendly hotels and green self-catering to eco cottages and green tourism accommodation, what will you choose?

Eco hostels

Looking for a budget-friendly and social way to see Scotland? Choose an eco-hostel. For example, enjoy a stay at Fraoch Lodge in Boat of Garten with a wealth of outdoor activities and glorious landscapes on your doorstep. Self-sufficient in compost, kindling and herbs, this eco hostel offers a range of family-friendly accommodation with shared, triple, double, twin and en-suite rooms, as well as kitchen facilities, free WiFi, walking and cycling maps and information too.

Glamping

Combine a little luxury with traditional camping and you get glamping! Go green and stay at The Dairy at Denend by Boutique Farm Bothies in Aberdeenshire. This secluded bespoke cabin has its own private spot on a farm and is the perfect place to relax and rejuvenate. Feel closer to nature by enjoying the wood-fired hot tub, pizza ovens and BBQs, and more.

Cottages

If you're looking for an eco-friendly holiday cottage, Scotland offers many to choose from. Blarghour Farm Holiday Cottages is a great self-catering option in Argyll on the shores of Loch Awe. If you’re looking to get outdoors, try fishing, or enjoy a boat trip, you’re in the right place. These cottages are great for a retreat with friends, family, or even a solo trip. Blarghour Farm is committed to helping the environment by using renewable electricity from both water and wind power, supporting native wildlife with bird feeders and nesting boxes, sourcing locally produced food and more.

Green self-catering

If you fancy feeling right at home at an eco-tourism resort, book into self-catering accommodation in Scotland. Enjoy the north west realms of Scotland with a stay at The Brochs of Coigach. These artistic and architecturally creative brochs blend into the landscape around them and feature stunning views out across the Summer Isles. From the moment you arrive, you’ll find everything is recycled, from door lintels made out of a sea-wrecked Victorian pier, to reused stones that originate from broken-down walls on the land.

You could also try an eco-retreat on a working farm in Scotland. Check out these farm experiences!

Eco hotels

Looking for luxury without harming the planet? Book a stay in the grand Atholl Palace Hotel in Pitlochry where you’ll be surrounded by serene woodlands and forests. This award-winning luxury hotel offers a spa with delightful treatments, a museum which charts the history of the palace, as well as stunning gardens to wander and admire. Elsewhere, Carberry Tower Hotel in Musselburgh is just outside of the capital and boasts a range of suites and lodges to relax in. Bring the whole family and enjoy a getaway together in the lush East Lothian countryside, with beaches and golfing experiences on your doorstep.

Eco holiday parks

Got the family, the dog and the kitchen sink with you? Pitch up at an environmentally friendly holiday park this year. For example, Coldingham Bay Leisure Park near Eyemouth is just a stone’s throw away from the stunning Berwickshire coastline, and boasts a variety of self-catering caravans and lodges with campervan facilities too.

B&Bs

We love B&Bs in Scotland. There are a range of cosy and welcoming B&Bs that offer a place to stay. Retreat to the Isle of Barra with a stay at Tigh na Mara Guesthouse or head south to Moffat in the Scottish Borders for a charming visit to Queensberry House B&B.

Lodges

Lodge holidays in Scotland offer a way to get back to nature. Head to Ericht Holiday Lodges in Blairgowrie where you can immerse yourself in secluded Perthshire landscapes. These cosy wooden lodges are dog-friendly and the perfect option for a break away from the bustling city. Working hard to give back to the surrounding landscapes and help preserve the culture, natural habitat and local resources, it’s a great eco-friendly option.

Castles

Many of Scotland's castles offer the opportunity for you to stay the night. Just a stone’s throw from Edinburgh, Carlowrie Castle is a luxurious spot set on 32 acres of lush estate in Kirkliston, with grand interiors, jaw-dropping glass chandeliers, and The Orangery is an eclectic space that is perfect for hosting a get-together. Dedicated to sourcing fresh, ethical food, carbon offsetting and preserving local heritage, it’s an ideal spot situated just 20 minutes from Edinburgh Airport.
